HOMELESS IN DAYTONA

Posted by Nicole Bowman on Friday, June 17, 2011
About a week ago I had the pleasure of visiting Daytona Beach, Florida.

With all it's beauty & splendor, I could not help but notice one issue that was glaringly obvious...the homeless popluation.

While in Daytona, I spent some time talking with people who identified as homeless and was shocked and saddened to find that many of the people I encountered were well over fifty.

Many of the people mentioned that they were waiting for their social security to kick in, at which point they could move into a more permanent dwelling place.

Until then, many chose to live on the streets or reside in their cars.

How did we let this happen?

How do we let people who do not want to be homless live on the streets while we rest in a warm bed and watch reality tv?

If I believed in the American Dream I guess I would say that they should have gotten into real estate, invested their money, or become an entrepreneur before the economic downturn.

And if I believed whole heartedly in the Law of Attraction I guess I could say they should have focused on better feeling thoughts until they were living their dreams or atleast felt the sensation of relief.

And if I believed in the law of karma, I guess I could say they were living it, and paying their debt to the karmic council.

But the truth is, I don't believe in any of these things. Not really.

I believe in positive, inspired action that comes from the God who sent us.

I believe in giving  a hot meal to the guy who needs it, and giving away a dollar or two that I'll probably only spend on coffee or a soda.

I didn't always feel this way, but time has shown me that compassion is soooo important.

That is what we can give to another human being.

Looking the person in the eye and saying, "I see you. I don't know your story, and I won't pretend to, but here's some help if you choose to take it."

Could you let someone without a home sleep in a warm bed for the night? I challenge you to do so!

Not every homeless person is addicted to drugs and alcohol. Maybe they just fell on hard times and need a few months to get back on their feet.

You never know where life could lead you, and one thing I have a learned is that the people you meet on the way up are usually the people who greet on the way down.

So, live your light, love yourself, and help someone today.

God is smiling!
