WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU HAD ONE YEAR TO LIVE?

Would everything change? Or, stay the same?

As this year comes to a close, I am reminded of a young woman I never met in person. I came to know her through a beautiful piece she wrote in January of 2018. Her name was Holly Butcher. Holly lived in Brisbane, Queensland Australia, and was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma. It is an aggressive form of cancer that affects children and young adults. At just 27, Holly's physical journey, full of travel and adventure, came to an end.

Before passing, she wrote a Facebook post that contained advice for a well lived life. Shortly after her post was published, Holly crossed over into spirit. Much to the surprise of her friends and family, the post went viral, and was shared many times over.

I read her letter at a particularly difficult place in my own life. I was questioning whether I wanted to be here at all. Holly's words gave me comfort, and offered a different perspective. It was much needed, because I found it challenging to see the brighter side of things.

That is why every December, I re-read her letter, and look for something new. I examine it for a piece of guidance or knowledge to take into the new year. Predictably, Holly never disappoints! This year, I am drawn to her commentary on social media, and the ways it can make us feel debilitated or insignificant.

Holly writes:

“While on this topic, delete any account that pops up on your news feeds that gives you any sense of feeling shit about yourself. Friend or not.. Be ruthless for your own well-being.”

I'll take it! Earlier this year, I made the decision to deactivate accounts that were bearing no fruit, and draining my energy. As I move into 2026, I will continue to do the same. I choose to connect with people who see me, honor me, and treat me with care. I also aim to do that for them. My preference is genuine relationships over bad faith conversations. This life is precious and finite. Live in such a way that your spirit continues to soar. Nurture your soul and make it proud.

In the words of sweet, funny Holly:

“Whinge less, people! .. And help each other more.”

Thank you Hol. Until we meet again!
